TikTok: Waterbomber Plane Crash Doesn’t Violate Standards

TikTok Waterbomber Plane Crash Doesn’t Violate Standards

TikTok will not be warning users about a video or even removing it, despite pressure to. The video in question is of the waterbombing plane crash that killed three U.S. firefighters. TikTok claims that the video does not violate its community guidelines.

Rick DeMorgan Jr, Paul Hudson, and Captain Ian McBeth were all killed when their plane crashed late January while fighting the deadly Australian bushfires in New South Wales.

The video shows the plane disappearing after dropping fire retardant. Dubbed over the film is the song ‘See You Again’ by Charlie Puth, which has been used in other videos to honor Paul Walker, an actor who died in a car crash.

The video is available to view and shown without any prior warning, and some TikTok users have reported it. It has more than 180,000 views on TikTok and has been liked more than 13,000 times.

The Rural Fire Service located in NSW said that it knows of the video, and has passed on any queries to the police. The police said that it would use this content to further its investigation into the crash.

While TikTok emphasizes that the safety of its users was of the utmost importance, it reiterated that the video doesn’t breach company guidelines. According to the instructions, videos that depict graphic, sadistic, or shocking content will not be allowed. However, this doesn’t apply to things like accidents or crashes.

TikTok also has an exception for this guideline when the video involves content that is considered newsworthy or is helping raise awareness on an important issue. However, as you may expect, there are many people out there that believe a video like this should come with a warning.
